Default Which is preferable: low income but good services or high income but bad services?

Is it preferable to have no job or a poorly-paying job but live in an area with excellent public transport, schools, doctors' surgeries, hospitals and shops on your doorstep (in essence, urban deprivation), or to have a well-paid job but live in an area with little if any public transport and where shops and public services are located faraway (in essence, rural deprivation)?

Public transport, schools, hospitals, and shops have never been very important to me. I would say the latter.

How American. Even in your big cities, the public transport is often surprisingly deficient - when I stayed with a cousin in Miami two years ago, I was taken aback by how limited the bus service there is in most areas, aswell as the fact the Metro there only really covers a small number of neighbourhoods.

What can I say? I've only used a public bus maybe a couple times in my life and trains only a handful, and that's only when I went into Chicago. As you well know, the distances here are just too great to have public transport outside of large cities. There aren't really city centers in the suburbs and rural areas. Everything kind of sprawls.

Yes and no. Even China and (needless to say) India have more extensive rail networks than the US does.

As in for long-distance travel? Yeah, I guess most American either fly or drive.

The former, and better yet, using Euro urban design (which favors pedestrians to begin with).

I agree. I hate public transports, they are full of psychos and smelly immigrants. Anyway it's always better to have money in the bank and be financially independent....unless we think like the welfare parasites or communists.
