True, but my point is that most of those coups in Chile you listed failed as well.

Costa Rica seems relatively rich (for LatAm standards) and democratic, also a nice place to live. Also Panama but I guess Panama is very specific because of the Panama Chanel.

Panama was one of the last LATAM countries to democratise, and then only because the US invaded it so that Manuel Noriega could be taken out of the country to face trial for drug trafficking.

I was talking about economics. The US did put a thug in power there, that Noriega guy until it got fed up with him.

The democracy is imposible, and as conceived now, negative and destructive. Most (99%) people can not govern themselves, they are not even able to have an stable and successful life, imagine ruling a country, they would choose people with whom they identify.

There were still some more cases of missing people during the first government of Caldera (1969-1974), but much less than during Leoni's government.
Even if there were some human rights abuses like that into the 70s, Venezuela's democracy, combined with its oil boom, would have still made it look like a paradise compared to most other countries in the region.

    Colombia in my humble opinion.
Apart the military government period was minimal, it’s in a way the most ancient democracy in Latam if I am not wrong.
