UK needs its own slavery remembrance day, union tells government

Aug 23, 2021

The British government is called upon to hold a National Day to commemorate the abolition of slavery in order to “eradicate one-off racial discrimination.”

Monday is globally recognized as an international day to commemorate and abolish the slave trade, an initiative introduced by UNESCO in 1998.

Recognizing the millions of people who suffered as a result of the Atlantic slave trade, it highlights the impact this has had on blacks for generations around the world.
