Kievan Rus was a lose federation of mini-states 1000 years ago. Nations and languages have split and shifted countless times since then.

That's because Russia behave like a hegemon (an asshole) in the region. It doesn't mean it has any right to do it. Just like UK can't claim the US.

Concerning Ukrainian language, I quote Panteleymon Kulish, the person who grounded its orthography and made it different from standard Russian one.

... It pleases the Poles that not all Russians write in Russian in the same orthography and lately they started to praise my invention much. Grounding their bad plans on my invitation they see it possible to flatter their enemy as I am. Seeing this banner in the arems of enemies, I'll be the first to abandon my invitation in the name of Russian unity.
