If you rescue certain good things about the Castro dictatorship, to sound fair, equitative and impartial, you should say the same things about Hitler or Franco... but you never do it, so you sound unfair, partial and hypocrite.

Hitler was on par with Stalin, so no. As for Franco, yes he did good things for the Spanish economy especially from the late 1950's, and even civil liberties did improve considerably from then onwards compared to the earlier part of his regime.

Because his cruelty, genocide and invasions outweighed any positives. (Same is true for Stalin and Mao, for that matter).

Particularly in the context of this forum, this is perhaps the most controversial of the list. Nevertheless, human rights abuses under him were on a far smaller scale compared to both most other Communist regimes and many Latin American military regimes. Furthermore, the improvements in health, education, science and sport were enormous, and certainly he rescued Cuba from the incredible corruption and decadence of the Batista period.

I think his greatest value is more as a metapolitical symbol than anything, as in, a big FY to Uncle Sam, and representing the utopia of Caribbean insular sovereignty, specially when there are still swaths of insular territory under the thumb of European (and Yankee) hegemons yet.

Plus also he was largely pressurised by US intransigence and hostility to turning towards Communism and the USSR. From what I gather, he originally wanted to instigate a sort of corporatist-hybrid economy, yet even this was too radical for the US overlords.
