The gold rushers, while many perhaps Anglo, Irish, and so on, were also Mexican (largely even... whatever a 'Mexican' may actually have been classified as then), Chinese, Polish, Italian, whatever. Like anything else, the migrants, indentured servants, slaves and prisoners that came to these countries ended up sealing their fate.

The Spanish, however, sent conquistadores. That's an important difference.
