The closer a people is genetically, culturally, linguostically, etc, the more differences they seem to see between each other than between themselves and distant groups. For example the English and Irish, who are genetically much closer together than many ethnicites within the same countries. Someone from anywhere in the balkans is more similar to another country from the balkans than someone from any other region, usually. Yet they will claim they are worlds apart as if, somehow, one or the other is closer to central asians then to each other. Why does familiarity breed contempt? Often times these people might have recent ancestors, they may well be cousins.
