I doubt that modern infantry has to endure that many hardships, they mostly hold ground for air and remote means, but you certainly need at least basic intelligence to organize yourself in a unit.

Infantry comes in first, so have to live without the benefits of logistics and so on. They secure and hold ground for other army units, other services, etc to come in. So that's where the 'hardship' is...
