The suicide rate in Scandinavia is actually lower than the European average and it is much lower than countries such as France and Hungary. It's not true for Finland either, they have a pretty average rate compared to the rest of the EU/EEA. That might have been true decades ago but not today.

Spoiler!

In the 1990's, Finland had a huge number of suicides but back then Finland had the worst recession the country has ever experienced. Finland was practically completely insolvent and lots of people lost their jobs, companies, life savings, and houses. That led to lots of suicides.

And their suicide rates have never been high, maybe their report rates, but not the overall average compared to other countries.

Happiness in this context is a measure of Bhutan's 9 domains of GNH which is quite different than being "happy". They confuse the emotion of happiness with quality of life.

They seem to have it better than most countries with a huge poor class and barely a middle class, and a small rich oligarchy.
