Some time ago, people used to buy cheap from Japan. In the early 50s and 60s, the "Made in Japan" thing did infect the western markets with cheap and low quality tech products. There was even some american propaganda against it, since competing against these cheap japanese products were not so easy. On nowadays things have changed a lot. I think most will respect China in a non distant future, but It'll take some time to change the mentality. China is in the path to become a country with a sizeable amount of skilled workers with degrees, so these low wage jobs at factories will move to other countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, etc.

Yes. When Japan was a developing country the Japanese filled the role that is being attributed to China nowadays and in the last 2 decades (no innovation, copying others, making cheap / low quality products etc).

Then Japan transitioned into a developed, innovative nation that invents stuff on its own and create high quality products. The same transition is happening in China nowadays. There's a difference though : Japan's population is like 1/10 of China's, so China is (potentially) a Japan on steroids.

There is a profound hostility against Japan within western elites, because Japan is different from China, a proper nationalist country with a solid cultural integrity,while always maintaining vitality to absorb and learn from the lastest technology and ideas.
