Hungary-Slovakia Summit - Hungary, Slovakia issue joint statement on measures against extremism, minority education


Komarno, Slovakia, November 15 (MTI) - At the Hungary-Slovakia summit on Saturday prime ministers Ferenc Gyurcsany and Robert Fico signed a joint statement expressing "strong and unequivocal opposition" to radical ideologies and movements.

The joint statement contains four articles.

The first says that the two prime ministers express their opposition to "any kind of extremism, xenophobia, intolerance, chauvinism, nationalism and every manifestation of violence."

They undertake to "...use all political and legal means necessary to fight these phenomena ..."

The statement also commits the two countries to exchange information and co-operation during the investigation of specific cases of harm against national minorities.

The second article says the national minorities form a "natural connection" between of the two countries, enriching and strengthening relations.

In addition, "the parties agree that the education of the national minorities of the two countries serves the objective of preserving the ethnic and cultural identity of these minorities ... In order to fulfil these objectives both sides support the use of educational materials of the best quality in the education of national minorities ..."

The third states that both countries' citizens wish to live in "an atmosphere of good neighbourly relations." They are determined to deepen bilateral co-operation in all areas, says the statement.

The fourth pledges that Slovakia and Hungary will advance "the cause of cross-border co-operation" and economic and social ties.

The preamble of the document also notes that the two countries confirm the importance of the 1995 treaty on good neighbourly relations in the spirit of common membership of the European Union and NATO.
