WEIRD PLACES - KYRGYZSTAN & bride kidnapping

This week on the WEIRD PLACES series let's travel to the inospitable central Asian steppe and the imponent Tengri Tagh mountains, more specifically to Kyrgyzstan land of the Kyrgyz, heirs of fearless nomadic warriors such as the Scytians and the Mongols!

From a western perspective its geograpgy and history would probably carry enough weird/exotic factor on its own, but since the ancient tradition of "Ala kachuu", in Kyrkyz literally means "to take a young woman and run away" a form of bride kidnapping that since the fall of the USSR has been revived on a significant scale, that adds significantly to the "weird" factor. Women trafficking happens all over the world, and this is not that. Bridal "kidnapping" here is nothing compared to human trading in the Mediterranean N. Africa or Southeast Asia. It is mostly ceremonial and staged in Kyrgyzstan, with actual rapists who use the tradition as an excuse to rape women punished severely by the other family and/or the state.

Ceremonial bridal kidnappings? Most of them though are ceremonial with very token "resistance" from the family. I've seen elaborately staged and planned bride "kidnappings" in Central Asia that have been planned months in advance because people just want to feel that adrenaline rush and put on a show where all of the families get to participate. It also makes the bride and groom feel like the center of a love story, which many like.

RT and Vice are USSR apologists in their videos about this, which is probably the real reason behind them. RT because it's a Russian state source, and Russians were the dominant ethnicity that imperialized Central Asia, and Vice because they are Socialists who say in their video, "men and women were much more equal during the Soviet times in Central Asia." The Vice kid is also mentally nuts regarding his descriptions and timelines. Actually stealing a woman and raping her is wrong, but this isn't that. Rapists might use the show-and-dance of it all as cover to actually do what is being claimed, but that's not typical at all. Basically this modern ritual is an evolution of the era when gallant/warrior men would pick their women and carry them off to the yurts.

This idea of being so irresistibly beautiful that a handsome, sociable, high-status steppe warrior who owns his own horse HAS to literally sweep you off your feet and into his family's tent is a woman's self-praising, status-indulgence, sex-appeal fantasy that is not unusual. Not different from the "barbarian steals the princess" and "take me, you brute" tropes of the west. In Kyrgyzstan, this is a process where it can play out safely under the auspices of each family. Everything is usually arranged in advance between designated "negotiators" for each family (who are essentially "kidnapping planners") for who will do what when the "kidnapping" happens.

As is usual from western media, these people are experientially and culturally illiterate.
