Black hobbits, female heroes and other races in Amazon’s new ‘Lord of the Rings’ series draw mixed reactions

    Oct 14, 2021

Amazon’s upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ series has drawn criticism for “preachy multiculturalism” after it emerged that the show will feature a diverse cast with a “tribe” of multi-racial hobbits and a “very strong female presence”.

Earlier in the week, British actor Lenny Henry revealed that he would be playing a “black hobbit” from an “indigenous” tribe called the Harfoots – a variety of hobbit described by Lord of the Rings (LOTR) author J.R.R. Tolkien as having darker skin.

Describing the series as a “prequel to the age” seen in the LOTR books and films, Henry told the BBC that the show was about the “early days of the Shire and of Tolkien’s environment”. In Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle-Earth, the Shire is the green grassland home country of the hobbit people.

“So we’re an indigenous population of Harfoots. We’re hobbits, but we’re called Harfoots. And we’re multicultural. We’re a tribe. We’re not a race,” said Henry, who added that the Harfoots were made up of a number of different ethnicities.

The series will more than likely be garbage anyways. Leave LOTR alone, it was a masterpiece as it was.

Omfg there are no black hobbits. Harfoots are not blacks, they are like south europeans. Having darker skin doesnt mean you are negroid wtf. Tolkien described stoors as light haired and eyed in general (similar to scandinavians, or irish), harfoots are the med verion of hobbits and in fact they have latin names like Sancho, Blancho etc.
In the Lotr blacks live in jungles of FAR HARAD, located South of Umbar, they are all dumb, evil and enemy of the West.

Blanco is a Fallohide, and the name is supposed to be derived from Old English "blanca" which means horse (http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Blanco).

Wog hobbits sounds more ridiculous than negro hobbits.

Harfoots are described as the most representative and numerous breed of hobbits, so are wogs the main type of hobbits? http://libgen.lc/index.php?req=lord+rings:

Before the crossing of the mountains the Hobbits had already become divided into three somewhat different breeds: Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides. The Harfoots were browner of skin, smaller, and shorter, and they were beardless and bootless; their hands and feet were neat and nimble; and they preferred highlands and hillsides. The Stoors were broader, heavier in build; their feet and hands were larger; and they preferred flat lands and riversides. The Fallohides were fairer of skin and also of hair, and they were taller and slimmer than the others; they were lovers of trees and of woodlands.

The Harfoots had much to do with Dwarves in ancient times, and long lived in the foothills of the mountains. They moved westward early, and roamed over Eriador as far as Weathertop while the others were still in Wilderland. They were the most normal and representative variety of Hobbit, and far the most numerous. They were the most inclined to settle in one place, and longest preserved their ancestral habit of living in tunnels and holes.
