Default Christ is just but merciful

2 corinthians 5,10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

“The patriot, like the Christian, must learn that to bear revilings and persecutions is a part of his duty; and in proportion as the trial is severe, firmness under it becomes more requisite and praiseworthy.” ~ Thomas Jefferson, 1805

    This is true

"You, O Lord, are a God kind and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness," Psalm 86:15 says, "You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and fidelity" . God's mercy stems from His unconditional love for us. He is merciful because He is love, in great measure (1 John 4:8). We are deserving of punishment as sinners (Romans 3:23). God's righteousness necessitates the punishment of sin; else, He would not be holy. God sent His Son because He loves us and is kind (John 3:16). In Matthew 27, we witness the entire extent of His kindness. On our behalf, Jesus is mercilessly tortured and slain; Jesus endured our rightful punishment, and we received God's mercy.

God desires for us to be with Him because of His love for us. For something to happen, God's mercy is essential; there is an unbreakable link between God's love and mercy. So that God's kindness may be extended to us, Jesus lay down His life and became the sacrificial lamb (Isaiah 53:7; John 1:29). Rather of punishing us for our sins, God permitted His Son to bear the penalty for us. That, according to Ephesians 2:4–5, is the greatest act of God's kindness. "Mercy prevails over judgment" to our eternal gain (James 2:13b).
