I think it’s because Texas has such a large population of Hispanics. They usually end up taking the jobs that are not wanted by others.. hard labor.. mowing,construction,garbage men, welding etc.

It would be very shocking to see someone mowing their own lawn in suburban Texas. It’s a trait I didn’t care for from the Texan men I knew.

Is this the upper class? In Illinois, hiring landscapers is, I would say, something rich or older people do. Regular people mow their own lawns.

In Texas it’s middle class and rich.

Even moving to Colorado I’ve noticed locals mowing their own lawn. And they’re wealthy too. I think it’s southern mentality (well Texan mentality at least) that has happened over the increase of Hispanics taking over hard labor jobs.

Like I said I've always found the culture of having housemaids, hired help on your property etc very alien from an Aus perspective - and the related tipping culture, porters, valet parking etc. I guess it goes back a long way in the South.

Yeah I’m not gonna lie.. living in the south is almost like living in a bubble. There’s still some old ways here just in new forms.

That's kind of shocking from an Australian perspective. Men here wouldn't dream of hiring someone to mow their lawn, and most are handy with motors (40+ ones anyway). The ubiquity of housemaids seems very strange here too.

Dead right there. I'm in the early stages of moving home onto a few acres on Aucklands rural fringe. I've already trimmed the trees and scrub overhanging the drive, filled a couple of potholes, and mowed the lawns in the immediate vicinity of the house. I'm replacing all the locks and window latches myself. I've got the bore, tank and rainwater collection underway as it is run down. And as it is triangular with two streams on its boundaries and the fencing is stuffed, I have started looking for a couple of meat goats to place on runs to keep the grass down as sheep will wander off.

Isn't this what guys do? I still go to the factory every day to work but there are 24 hours in every day so why sit on my chuff after 4.20pm? The work is fun in itself.

I have got a little lazy and got a pool guy in to empty and clean it up, although, I was knee deep in it today with a net removing frogs. I can't stand the thought of them being sucked up pumps when I can relocate them.
