California in ‘state of emergency’ amidst rising hate crimes, Attorney General says

Communities are in a “state of emergency” following a 31% rise in crimes motivated by racism and various forms of bias that were reported in California in 2020, state Attorney General Rob Bonta said after meeting with civic leaders in Long Beach on Thursday.

The roundtable discussion at the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library is the sixth in a series of 13 scheduled across the state to address a dramatic rise in the number of hate crimes coming to light over the past year. The number of attacks motivated by bias in the state jumped from 1,015 in 2019 to 1,330 in 2020, according to a report released in June by the California Department of Justice.

“We are in the middle of a full-on state of emergency, a full-on state of crisis, when it comes to hate crimes and hate incidents nationwide and here in California,” Bonta said during a news conference after the closed-door meeting with community leaders on Thursday. “No part of the state is immune from hate.”
