    My paternal surname is not common outside of Galicia and does not sound "typically Spanish" if that is what you mean. People in the US thought I was Portuguese because of my surname actually.

    And my maternal surname is Basque.

    Most Latin Americans can't tell them apart either. RMuller probably doesn't know this, but the suffix -ez comes from Basque so a lot of Spanish surnames are actually paying homage to the Basque language by adding -ez at the end of every surname.

    It's a patronymic suffix just like -son in English.
