At AncestryDNA regions and genetic communities are determined by IBD segments. Therefore these things are also sometimes referred to as "recent ancestry". Any commonalities from the middle ages you refer to (will have been before 1000 AD) will have been fragmented too much for today yielding IBD segments that are judged to be recent ancestry. Actually it's even about matches that you have in your AncestryDNA matching list. Regularly 3 of them are shown as examples for your connection with a particular region (if you click on it). In a number of north Slavic regions there are in the case of Stearsolina just shown 2, 1 or even zero matches. This is what seems buggish to me. But there will be an answer from AncestryDNA on this topic within a few days.
