University of Texas school keeps Stan Richards namesake despite racist comments

Nov 23, 2021

Leaders at the University of Texas communications school said Monday that they are not changing the name of the Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public Relations despite racist comments made by the school's namesake last year.

In October 2020, Stan Richards, founder of the Dallas-based advertising agency the Richards Group, said an advertisement idea for Motel 6 was “too Black” and might offend Motel 6’s “white supremacist constituents” during a Zoom call with agency employees, according to AdAge. Richards later apologized and resigned from the agency.

Jay Bernhardt, dean of the Moody College of Communication, wrote in an email sent to students that he had consulted with UT President Jay Hartzell and Provost Sharon Wood about the issue.
