I am very ignorant to this subject, but based on the little knowledge I have about this, ethnically they are right? Wasn't Austria and Germany once one country?.

I am guessing this is kind of a similar case to Spanish and Portuguese I suppose

Austrians are ethnic Germans living in another nation, like Bavarians in that they have some strange cultural quirks and dialects. This has been the thought for all of history until Germany started losing the war. Before that they even voted in favor of the Anschluss in 1938. I realize that vote was heavily influenced by the Nazis, but even without that influence the majority would have likely still voted for it.

Among Serbian language speakers, they call both austrians and germans as "Svabos" and think I live in Germany.
