I wouldn't say Plymouth Colony was chosen deliberately by anyone and definitely not to the exclusion of Jamestown. If the Pilgrims have taken a more prominent position in our history, it's because of the Mayflower Compact, which influenced our government, and the fact that they present a better picture of the American story, whether typical or not. Families coming here for religious freedom is perhaps a more inspiring history than single men coming here to improve their temporal lives.

Leave it to Richmondbread and Daco-Celtic to turn Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims into a North vs. South debate. I for one have never thought of it in those terms, nor have I ever heard anyone actively ignoring Jamestown. I think of both events as our founding moments. I do think the Puritans, perhaps to Daco's point, were more representative of American religious sentiments as a whole. Sectarianism and hardcore, serious religion were the norm across the country. Southern Baptists don't have a lot in common with Anglicans.
