One comment to this discussion and sorry if it is mentioned already earlier (I have no time to read all pages now). I just noticed talks about working hours in Western Europe (in this context I'll add Scandinavia among vs USA). I someway will/would add working conditions and even more working culture to this.

Now, I will not go to check what might be the difference between working hours (weekly). I assume if there are some differences, then Americans will work bit more hours. The same still vary a bit inside of Europe. Over all I do not like this matter anyway. What really counts is what you/people can produce/succeed to done in those hours. There are too big differences already inside of Europe/Europeans in this. Bigger than any IQ matters (which used to be talked regularly in TA). Now of course not talking about Western Europeans alone....

Opposite I wonder will Western Europeans have more holidays than Americans? 4 weeks at summer time + 1 week at winter time? At least here. And weeks alone will not give whole picture. Nope, here might be other kind of differences and already between Central Europeans and Scandinavians ... as we (latter ones) tends to keep all those 4weeks together. Standard or norm to here. Some non-mention nation ethnic(s) ... colleagues of my father someway looked that weird. By silently saying: you will show up as ''not important employee'' if you'll do that. They meant ''if you're ''able'' do that''. Of course now I'm talking about white collar people, not blue collar people.

What to add? Of course Christmas, Eastern, Independence day etc. are holidays. But even numbers of these (legal holidays) might vary country by country. Some having New Year Day, Midsummer, Epiphany etc. as holidays as well.

I read years ago one article about Western Europeans (French, Dutch, Scandinavians etc.) ... would they want to get a rid off some of their legal holidays and instead earn bit more money (closing to Americans system)? Most of them said: No.
Life (living) is not only earning money (not at least after you will earn it already enough for your everyday life). There are some other values which might mean as well. In my eyes ... it seems like free time means more to Western Europeans than to Americans.

Lastly. I might be wrong with this, but what I have noticed: For Western Europeans .... if their company will become sold/bought by USA company ... and US style leadership (employer => how to run company) will come to norm ... nope, most of us will not like that.

Bit same if we for example compare the Code of Conducts by Akzo Nobel (European company; originally Danish company) vs Dow (from USA) ... those have lightyears differences. If nothing else, then not bad for first ones workers.

You could speak your mind without going to jail, you were able to protest (not riot) in the street without being prosecuted, you have the right to bear arms, and you also have a right to live where you want. Now they are trying to make us more like Europe and "modernize" us, stripping away those freedoms.
