    Default Britain's 20 best beaches

    Britain's 20 best beaches

Planning to spend the summer close to home? Then pencil in at least one day-trip to the coast. Joanna Symons introduces some of our favourite spots.

It looks as though we are in for a summer of restraint. A survey this week suggested that 39 per cent of us, or 17.7 million people, will not be taking a holiday in the coming months, at home or abroad. But that doesn't mean you have to limit your horizons to a deck chair in the local park. Even if you're not planning a fortnight in the sun, you can still wait for a balmy day, pack up a picnic and strike out for the coast.

To help you plan your trip we have asked a group of our regular writers to recommend their favourite beaches around the country. Most of the nominations are of the wild and unspoilt variety, where even at the height of summer you can find a secluded spot beneath cliffs or among dunes. Some beaches – those in Scotland and the Isles of Scilly, for instance – are so remote that you will need to find a base for a night or two. So for each destination we have suggested somewhere to stay locally, and – where it exists – somewhere to eat on or near your stretch of sand.

Should they desire the best beachs, it would be necessary to cross the Bristol Channel to England's South-West Treffie.

I keep trying to remind myself how lucky I am to live within 25 miles of some of the best beaches in Britain.

I've always liked the Isle of Scilly, look at this and try not to fall in love with the place!

Outside of London I would recommend either Newcastle or Brighton. Newcastle seems to be the popular choice at the moment.

    Newcastle has a beach?

Brighton has a horrible beach, way overrated - all stones. Nice seafront though.

He might mean Whitley Bay. Haven't been there since I was a child. But it's not the best lol.

Here are some pictures from Brighton. I was there for a year and I probably only stepped foot on the beach three of four times.
