Germany wants to deepen relations with Spain to strengthen the EU

Berlin, Nov 28 (EFE) - The German Minister of State for Europe, Michael Roth, highlighted Sunday the "excellent" relations with Spain and the desire to work even more together for the European Union.

"Our relations with Spain are excellent and we want to deepen them. We are united by the fact that we understand the EU first and foremost as a community of values. We want to jointly strengthen the EU, above all also within the framework of an ambitious neighborhood policy," he said in a statement.

In addition, Roth will meet with his Spanish counterpart Juan González-Barba, with whom he will discuss issues such as the Southern Neighborhood, the Conference on the Future of Europe and the Spanish presidency of the EU in 2023.

Both the bellicosity of the current governments in Rome and Warsaw against Germany and the readiness of the new government of Pedro Sánchez to collaborate with Berlin may be creating a window of opportunity for closer relations between Spain and Germany, two countries with good perceptions of each other, both in their public opinions and at the official level. But both partners are asking for more from each other. Berlin wants Spain to be more proactive in presenting proposals and even to dare to take the lead on some issues on the EU agenda. Madrid, on the other hand, yearns for more pro-integrationist leadership from Berlin to advance an ever closer Union, especially in the euro zone.

In an increasingly globalized and competitive world, and also experiencing a phase of technological revolution and major geopolitical movements, Germany and Spain - two middle European powers with many common interests and many complementarities in terms of perspectives and capabilities - will need each other in the future to preserve liberal values, to continue building the EU and to maintain Europe's influence in the world.
