Biological knowledge wrecks food for you. Used to work with a guy who had minored in parasitology. Lunch with this guy was a blast. I did not enjoy his lectures about the food I was happily scarfing. Not one bit.

A specific example is sea cucumbers. I had to take one life science course in college, so I took a biology course. It turns out sea cucumbers don't have a G. I. tract. They are porous and the waste just sort of washes through them. Their entire body is part of their waste disposal system.

Objectively, their excretions aren't that bad and for the most part they have been washed away. I still just can't do it.

It is not unlike people who don't bother to devein their shrimp. Those aren't veins.

Funny story, these things were considered absolutely vile and pollutants, ruining the rating of beaches here in Greece, until they discovered the Japanese pay good money for them and now they are extinct.

Have you ever made Rumaki? I'm not talking that deep-fried perversion that sometimes is part of a poo-poo platter. It is a bit of chicken liver and half a water chestnut wrapped in a strip of bacon skewered and cooked. If you take it to a party, it will confuse the most adamant liver hater.

If you bring the dips as well, no one will notice that the meaty one between the black bean dip and the guacamole is actually headcheese.

It sounds very tasty, but that's above my pay grade. I do well if I zap a burrito in my microwave. I once cooked six or seven days a week. It was more than Campbell's soup too.

I actually was a good cook. I learned that my "mom's recipe", for one of my favorites, was actually my dad's recipe, and it rocked the foundations of my world.

It's just a tomato sauce with anchovies and capers (kalamata olives will work in a pinch) and lots of spicy peppers. Very tasty. Putanesca translates loosely as 'like a harlot'.
