Never liked him, as a child. I was just put off by the mincing style of his, though I did like a few of his songs. Grew to appreciate his work, in my teens.

Always knew he was desi, looked a lot like a Pakistani friend of mine, down to the goofy teeth.

Funny thing is, the local kebab shop guy (in a Cheshire town, overwhelmingly English, the mid '80s), looked like a muscular version of him, but with a normal mouth. And that guy was Greek, iirc.
