The Portuguese town of Águeda is home to the world’s largest Santa Claus since 2016.

Located on the right bank of the Águeda River, the impressive structure is 21-metres tall – about the size of a seven-storey building – and is brought to life by around 250,000 LED light bulbs.

It boasts the official record of the largest Santa Claus in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records and has become a tourist attraction for the small town in the district of Aveiro, attracting fellow Portuguese from other places but also visitors from all over the world.

The town also displays what it is called the “smallest Santa in the world”, which you need a microscope to see, created by artist Willard Wiggan.
Águeda’s Christmas programme also features an “ecological ice rink”, a Christmas market, concerts and street entertainment.

What type of meal do you eat on Christmas? I know some different areas in Portugal have different traditional dishes for it

Is Portuguese Christmas very different from the Norwegian one?
A talk about our traditions like what kind of tree we have, what we do, what we eat...

Usually in all the country is the famous codfish with boiled vegetables, but are parts of the country where they eat octopus. I don't know where exactly.

Desserts are too many and different across regions so that is why I invite other portuguese to comment on their usual christmas characteristics because has many nuances throughout the country.

One thing that I think is across the country is 25th Christmas day lunch where we eat roasted young goat.

Very nice idea for thread so fresh comparing to bland topics which go on and on

Do you have some kind of customs connected to food and luck. I mean some kind of talisman, for example some people in Poland believe that carp scales from Christmas dinner kept in your wallet will bring you luck in economical aspect. Are the some believes like that in Portugal?
