Default Honesty and selfishness across cultures

This is a more or less, scientific study

    Honesty and selfishness across cultures

Rationalist approaches to economics assume that people value their own interests over the interests of strangers. Cohn et al. wanted to examine the trade-off between material self-interest and more altruistic behaviors (see the Perspective by Shalvi). They distributed more than 17,000 wallets containing various sums of money in 355 cities across 40 countries. In contrast to what rationalist theories of economics predict, citizens were more likely to return wallets that contained more money. The findings also reveal a high level of civic honesty across nations.

And a short video showing the results.

Lol to China. Confucius must be stirring in his tomb.

I knew about this study because a newspaper wrote the results for Barcelona (59% reporting rate) and Madrid (37%).

Very rich countries with a disappointing honesty and very poor countries with an acceptable one.

An China, my opinion of them as 'honourable and honest people' is vanished forever.

    What a disappointment.

Stands to reason that larger sums would be returned more often. There is a guilt factor that isn't being accounted for. The larger the sum of money being taken, the more guilt. People avoid guilt. You could call that altruism, I suppose, but it's rather the reverse and is at its root selfish.

I think it's fear actually. The larger the sum of money being taken, the more fear to be caught.

Another big surprise for me is Romania, 51% of reporting rate. Being so poor and with so many gypsies... I wouldt'n believe, but this study seems pretty unbiased and scientific.

I watched this recently. Not an actual study but involves many American (large and small) and Canadian cities (4): 200 wallets. Spread out equally between poor and better off communities.

People can convince themselves that taking $20 is no big deal. It's more difficult to convince oneself that taking $200 is no big deal.

It seems you confused China for Japan. All the people I know who've been to China have been scammed in some way or another. Also, their hygiene customs are deplorable at least from a Western POV.

Never been to China, but China came to me. From now on I will be less confident than I used to be with chinos here.

And it's more difficult to find a bar with no chinese owner here than to find 'el Dorado', but I've found new forces to keep trying.
