What about the rest of the continent? Colombia, Peru and Venezuela had definitely deteriorated in the 80's compared to the 70's, even though in Peru's case it became an electoral democracy, while the other two were unchanged in that respect.

In human rights, Colombia and Peru were worse in the 80s too.

In the case of Venezuela it had its moment of many leftists "desaparecidos" but mostly back in the 60s, prior to when that happened in the southern cone. Then in the 70s it was much better, but it got worse in the 80s, with special mention of the events of the "Caracazo" (1989), when the Army was deployed in the streets of Caracas and other large Venezuelan cities in response to widespread protests against the packages of economic measures of Carlos Andres Perez, with the result of several hundreds of dead and/or missing people, as consequence of the army smashing the protests.

Yeah, 1989 was definitely the beginning of the end of Venezuela's sense of exceptionalism, wasn't it?

for my country, Peru, it was the 1980s, the era of terrorism.
Many people emigrated and there was hyperinflation and crisis.

(Playing devil's advocate again): but on the other hand, weren't the military regimes that lasted between 1968 and 1980 quite oppressive?

Yes, but the country still lasted, all of that erupted in the 1980s with terrorism, assassinations, military groups, hyperinflation, violation of human rights by the government and terrorists.
in 75 the country returned to democracy. But Alan García's communism ruined the country and put it into crisis. The country was already heavily in debt due to military expenditures, foreign debts, and companies expropriated during the Velasco government.

I thought 1975 saw a new dictator emerge - Bermudez?
