Default Which railway station is more useful: Cardiff Central or Edinburgh Waverley?

From Cardiff, you can reach all of South Wales and North Wales directly (absurdly, however, to get to Mid-Wales you have to go via Swansea or Shrewsbury), Southwest England, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Sussex, London, most of the West Midlands, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.

From Edinburgh, you can reach most of Scotland directly as far north as Aberdeen and Inverness, Northeast England, most of Yorkshire, much of Northwest England, parts of the West Midlands, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, London and most of Southwest England.

Dunno about those, but speaking about useful (or useless) British engineering feats, what do you think about the second crossings of the Severn Estuary and the Forth of Firth?
They're large bodies of water in which building bridges is certainly costly, and they already had bridges right next to the new ones. What's the matter? In such large projects, didn't they plan ahead in time and build enough lanes to handle today and tomorrow's traffic?
Anyway, I suppose the British rail system is far more functional than the Portuguese, which is a fucking joke.

I don't think only range is useful but number of people who actually use the station, it is getting on and getting off the train. It is hard to estimate, for sure no one makes such statistics so it's hard to tell. On the other hand we can also measure which one is more useful if we would ask "how would the infrastructure deal with lack of the station" but it also needs to be modeled if you want specific answer

Those newer bridges were necessary to handle the increasing volume of traffic. Re Portuguese rail: yes I remember trying to book a train from Porto to Santiago de Compostela, and it was so convoluted I gave up.

The government does publish annual stats on passenger numbers per station actually.

Cardiff. Who's going to take a train from Scotland to London? Returns start at 150ish, It'll be quicker and cheaper to fly.

Actually, there's a new low-cost company called Lumo, which claims that most of its fares between Kings Cross and Edinburgh are no more than £30.
