Default Bulgarian population falls to 6.5mil

Bulgarian sees its population decline by 11.5% in a decade

    https://abcnews.go.com/International...ecade-82130984

SOFIA, Bulgaria -- Bulgaria’s population has declined by 11.5% in the past decade, according to first results from the 2021 census.

The National Statistical Institute said that the nation has shrunk by 844,000 people, from some 7.3 million in 2011 to 6.5 million today.

Experts attribute the decline to low birth rates, high mortality, and a steady migration flow that has seen working-age people leaving to look for better jobs and education prospects in Western Europe and beyond.

“This is the most drastic decrease registered so far,” Magdalena Kostova from the statistical institute told reporters. “The aging of the population is another lasting trend.”

Bulgaria has for years been on the radars of the U.N. as one of the nations with the fastest shrinking population in the world.

Since the Balkan nation moved from a totalitarian system to a free-market economy three decades ago, its population has decreased by nearly a quarter, from almost 9 million to 6.5 million today.

U.N. experts estimate that if these trends continue, Bulgaria will contract further to about 5.4 million people by 2050.

This is the result of crass incompetence of the political system, very low wages and wide corruption in society. It's not surprising that the population will make less children and migrate to countries with better economic conditions, not surprising at all. I predict similar trends to other national censuses in East Europe from this year.

In such case third world countries would not grow like mushrooms after rain but they do. Population decline is same in very wealthy northwestern Europe, just there native population is replaced with migrants.

Low standard of living in causes emigration but I don't think we can say that lower standard of living = lower fertility rates. Spain, Italy, South Korea, Japan etc are more developed than Bulgaria but have lower fertility rates.

Bad economy lowers the moral and incentive to have children in more highly educated societies, which East Europe still is, contrary to the Third World, where the populations have much lower exposure to good education and contraception tools. In the West people realized there is more to life than just having children, when a society is less traditional, they will make less children.

Bulgaria's fertility rate has been on the rise since 2013. I wonder what % of these births is ethnically Bulgarian and % is Gypsy. Bulgaria could be the European country with the highest % of gypsy population.

    I can agree with that.

It probably is, I believe percentage of Gypsies is bigger than in Romania according to some data I saw. But it's also possible Gypsies emigrate quite more than ethnic Bulgarians do.
Bulgaria isn't really welfare friendly country compared to NW Europe and Gypsies are very segregated in Bulgaria, which is pretty non PC society.

At least in Germany and Austria there aren't many ethnic Bulgarian immigrants (much more from ex-Yugoslavia) but there are many Bulgarian Gypsies. I believe same applies for UK.
This tells me Bulgarian Roma emigrate in significantly higher percentage than ethnic Bulgarians.

In a Bulgarian village you can't live like this, you can't have a self-sufficient farm & get all services you need via barter (money not needed):

It has nothing to do with education (Africans from this village in the video above still get education). Only with affordability of having kids.

There is also much less bureaucracy in third world countries, obviously.

And taxes are much lower or even inexistent (as I wrote they probably don't even need money, but all transactions & exchange is barter).

    Horrifical numbers...

Their Bureau of Statistics estimated with projections that Bulgaria had a population of 6.9 million in 2021.
Yet the census shows 400,000 less than that number!

A good example that simple joining the European Union cannot raise the life standard, but it can devastate the country with emigration.
