Yet the census shows 400,000 less than that number!

A good example that simple joining the European Union cannot raise the life standard, but it can devastate the country with emigration.
I bet most or large percentage of those that emigrated are Gypsies. Western Euro prisons are full with Bulgarian Roma. Bulgaria also has large Turkish population. Perhaps they are emigrating to Turkey now when it's economically on par with Balkan countries (but I have no knowledge about that, just guessing)

Bulgaria might try this solution - invite immigrants from Central Asia, from ethnic groups genetically close to nomadic Old Bulgars.

True, it could be that it is the in fact large emigration of Gypsies.
We will find out when their Statistical Bureau release datas about ethnic structure of population in last census.

I am not sure is it reliable, but there are some datas that almost half of young population has non-Bulgarian language as native.

    S. Ignatov: For 48% of the first graders the mother tongue is not Bulgarian
Students in Sofia leave for school tomorrow, unless something extraordinary happens, said the Minister of Education

In 48% of Bulgarian first-graders, their mother tongue is not Bulgarian, Education, Youth and Science Minister Sergei Ignatov was quoted as saying by BGNES.

"At first glance, some would say it's threatening, but it's not.

Although the mother tongue of these students is not Bulgarian, we are all Bulgarian citizens and here is the role of cultural and historical heritage as a tool for building national identity of Bulgarian citizens and at the same time - European, "said the Minister. Ignatov stressed that cultural -the historical heritage must become part of an infrastructure in order to bring added value

Bulgaria have both low birth rate and mass migrations. Ticket to extinction.

As I said, there is notable low number of visible ethnic Bulgarian immigrants in say Germany, Switzerland or Austria compared to Croats, Serbs, Bosniaks or Albanians (or Poles and Russians). So I remain convinced large amount of "Bulgarians" abroad are Gypsies (criminal statistics from UK and Germany align with that).

I suppose Roma and Turkish, since these are two largest non-Bulgarian ethnic groups in Bulgaria.
