It’s an impossible situation. Some of the lowest birth rates on earth, very old population, economically very poor. And thanks to EU FOM it’s very easy for any educated professional (doctor, engineer etc) to go over to Germany and have a much higher standard of living. Only things Bulgaria can do is open their borders or make serious attempts to bring back diaspora and encourage higher birth rates.

Not that surprising imo. Their muslims are local Turks, Pomaks (balkanic converts to Islam) and Gypsies who have been there for centuries, not immigrants.

At least Bulgarian Muslims are not recent migrants from other continents as in western Europe, but "natives" - Turks, Gypsies and Pomaks.

Bad economy lowers the moral and incentive to have children in more highly educated societies, which East Europe still is, contrary to the Third World, where the populations have much lower exposure to good education and contraception tools. In the West people realized there is more to life than just having children, when a society is less traditional, they will make less children.

I agree with that. Even traditional societies have lower birthrates if they achieved a specific degree education and satisfactory affluence. Most countries with high birthrates are failed societies/nations and, very important too, there are basically no women rights where you often already have children with 18(and even younger) and basically living as childbirth machine. I think the social conditions of Eastern/SE-Europe isn’t comparable with some African or Asian countries.

I think the social conditions of Eastern/SE-Europe isn’t comparable with some African or Asian countries.

I would be highly shocked if anyone on this forum would in any shape or form claim that Eastern European countries have similar social conditions than large parts of the Third World. I mean, they are hardly any different from Western European countries in culture, only less progressive than those.
