1) A stronger united Europe = far better stance against other world powers such as India, China and Russia in the economic sense.
2) Each of you could still retain some autonomy (just as the states in the USA) yet protect one another much efficiently with a single powerful army. France has nukes, so you guys can be covered under their nuclear shield / deterrence.
3) There are many cultural differences, but you have a lot of common things historically.
4) The Roman Empire worked, but it lacked communication and a better transportation infrastructure which is what Europe has now.

Here in the USA each states holds a good amount of autonomy and each state seems to have its own identity (to an extent) due to each state having its own separate powers and unique constitutions separate from Washington D.C, this could also work in Europe, perhaps even better.
