I don't think so. There were some mixed-race communities where it was not uncommon to see shifting race on census records, such as in parts of eastern Tennessee with Melungeon communities, parts of Louisiana, a few towns in Ohio, etc. And there were societies of rich mixed-race elites of the 1900s who only allowed "high-yellow" people who could see their veins into the group.

The brown paper bag was the standard that mixed communities (especially Creoles of color, they do NOT consider themselves "black" and in fact were the ones who invented the test. Almost all black mayors in New Orleans have been Creole. The ghetto blacks hate them) used to let people go to their sorority parties.
