Békes vármegyében Endrődhöz közel fekszik Sima nevezetű puszta, hajdan a Simay nevű nemzetség birtoka; még 1456-ban élt és e pusztát valószinűleg birta azon Békes megyei előkelő nemes, Simay Gergely, ki a Hunyadiak részére kelt királyi adomány levélben igtató király emberűl neveztetik meg. *
A paizs fölötti sisak koronáján két kiterjesztett fekete sasszárny látható. Foszladék jobbról aranyvörös, balról ezüstkék. *

Basically it says that there were two noble Simay families. The Simay's of Békés county took their name from the desert called Sima located near Endrőd, which was in their possession, specifically it belonged to the nobleman Gergely Simay who lived in the 15th century.

The other one spelled as Simai, appeared in Transylvania, Szamosújvár (Cluj county). They were of Armenian background and the two brothers Lukács and Salamon Simai were merchants and acquired their noble status from Queen Maria Theresa in 1760. The last part describes their coat of arms.

In Békés country, near Endrőd, laying a field called Sima, in the past it belonged to Sima family. In 1456, probably this field was owned by Gergely Simai nobleman from Békés country, who named by Hunyadi's donation letter as the King's man.
300 years later in Transylvania, Szamos-Újvár, a hungarian noble family with armenian roots has appeared, two member called Lukács Simai and brother Salamon traders and men have raised into the nobility by an issued heraldic noble letter written by Mária-Terézia Empress in Vienna, 1760, May 26. Promulgated by a General Assembly in Inner-Szolnok country, 1760,oct 6.
The coat of arms of the family is a shiled which is divided in two ("vizirányosan" it cannot be translated), in a northern red part two pigeon stand and facing each other, a golden olive branch in their beak, in the lower blue part there is a church with red roof and it's tower, beyond which there is a curved entrance, turned to right. Over the shield, in the helmet's crown there are two opened black eagle wing. The shred is golden red in rght side and silver blue in left side.

I don't know. My grandmother's last name was Simay, and I was wondering what the meaning behind it was. This is just what I happened to find.

Well if her surname was Simay, there's a possibility that she came from a noble family. I'm sure you know that when a surname ends in a -y, instead of an -i, it indicates noble background. Do you have any information about where does her ancestors come from?
