    Default Africans in Ulcinj

When Ulcinj became part of Montenegro in 1880. there was no Orthodoxes there. Population was mostly Muslim with Catholic minority and predominantly ethnic Albanian. Blacks from Ulcinj were Muslims and they are assimilated by local Muslim Albanians.

Yea. That black people were second wave of African migrants in area, like ancestors of local Albanians much before them.

My parents said Ulcinj was extremely exotic in vibe, like a middle eastern enclave compared to rest of Montenegrin coast. It was a pirate (Saracen) nest once, so I heard.

Ulcinj was under the Ottoman occupation from 1571. to 1880. In early period of Ottoman rule 400 Berber families from northern Africa settled in Ulcinj. Some of that Berbers were pirates and among other things they dealt with bringing of blacks from Sudan and Congo which they sold at the slave market in Ulcinj. With time is formed black community in Ulcinj (of several hundred people).

Incredible. Never heard of. 400 families are a lot!

Would be really interesting with some DNA tests from there (preferably 23andMe).

I found that in Serbian sources.

In Ulcinj in Ottoman time except Berbers and blacks were present Sephardic Jews.

    History always surprises.
Until few years ago for example i did not know that between 200 and 300 German families from Mainz settled to Belgrade after the 1718 when Austrians conquered part of Serbia south of Sava and Danube rivers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdo...ia_(1718-1739)). In 1739. when Ottomans again took Belgrade all Germans moved to present day South Banat District and lived there until 1945-50 together with other Germans who settled to Banat directly from southern, southwestern and central Germany during the 18th century https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Banat_District
Why vast majority of German colonists to Pannonian plain in 18th century were from present day Germany (mostly southern) and very little from Austria? Germany was poorer than Austria or what?

There is, finally, another people that gives a special character to the local place: these are Negroes, up to 20 families. They were taken out to the Ulcinj as children from the shores of Africa, bought there for money or simply captured; they were first in service, and then became free, acquired some fortune, got families, got themselves a spouse, also Negresses, and live in their houses, on their land. There are quite wealthy people and captains among them; one has his own ship and has general respect as an honest, intelligent and useful public figure. But the native Ulcinj inhabitants have some neglect for them, and when the deputation went to the prince, they did not agree in any way to accept a Negro into their midst. "How is it possible," they said— "for him, our former slave, bought with money, to become on the same board with us?"
Pavel Rovinsky (1831 —1916) from In the new possessions of Montenegro (V novykh vladeniyakh Chernogorii) for journal Russian Thought (Russkaya mysl) 1883
