Australia suggests boat people will be returned to Vietnam - Asia - Around the globe - World - Dalje.comThe Australian government hinted Wednesday that passengers aboard a boat intercepted at sea will be returned to Vietnam.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton refused to comment in detail, but noted that Australia had good bilateral relations with Vietnam.
"Where if it is safe to do so and we've met our international obligations, we don't owe people protection, those people will go back to their country of origin," he told reporters in Sydney.
"Just because somebody is on a boat does not make them a refugee," Dutton said.
In April, the navy intercepted a boatload of 46 Vietnamese and took them back to that country.
But Dutton refused to confirm reports that a vessel of suspected Vietnamese sighted off the north-western coast earlier this week had been intercepted by the navy.
