Ottawa to set up hate incident hotline amid reports of racism and anti-Semitism during COVID-19 mandate protests
Feb 1, 2022
“We already have a number of hate-related incidents that we are investigating,” Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloughly announced the hotline in a video news conference on Monday. “We encourage anyone who has been the victim of a hate crime or thinks they may have been the victim of a hate crime or may have been exposed to incidents of hate.”
The hotline, which is expected to be activated within 24 hours, will allow reports of criminal activity, threats, assaults and hate-related crimes “directly related to demonstrations,” Slowley said.
The announcement came days after truckers “Freedom Convoy” arrived in Ottawa to protest against a vaccine mandate requiring truckers entering Canada to be fully vaccinated or to face testing and quarantine requirements went. The incident turned into widespread protests against COVID-19 restrictions and a blockade of the city and obstruction of the US-Canadian border crossing.
Protesters have been accused of desecrating a National War Memorial and harassing residents and workers at a homeless shelter.
