Not sure how you got that estimate? Cigarettes in Croatia are expensive for average consumer. And their price keeps increasing (many smokers buy cut tobacco though, I did too, and that's cheaper). You have to take in account living standard.

I'm pretty sure if you take the % of male adult smokers only, Turkey would be higher (because the relative lower % of female smokers drag the average down, still 29% is above European average)

You see in France a negative effect (male % is lower than average %, which means more women smoke than men); while for the entire Eastern Europe, Balkans and Turkey, it is much higher.

You are right, I didn't consider cost of living. They would only be that fraction/price for Brits etc.

It's common knowledge, not only in Muslim world, but in more patriarchal societies in general, with higher gender imbalances, men smoke more than women.

Well, the youth of MENA background keep the similar gender-imbalanced smoking profile (more men than women) even if born and raised abroad, it doesn't mean there are no women smoking, certainly much more percentage-wise than in their original country, but it is not as equalitarian as in host ethnic Western people

I see less and less people smoking cigs here, more vaping (if anything). Things have changed a bit since my parent's generation, when the weirdos were the ones who didn't smoke cigs.

Spain is the first country in Europe to ban smoking on all of its beaches after the government passed a new law following a public petition.

From now on, anyone caught lighting up on a beach is set to be hit with a hefty €2000 fine. A ban is already in place in Barcelona and the Canary Islands, where smoking on popular tourist beaches is prohibited.


Can you envisage a time when smoking is marginalized/almost invisible in Spanish society? i.e. majority would call the few who do smoke 'weirdos'

It doesn't surprise me, it's part of the hygienist-leftist propaganda, rationalized for health reasons, but the profound reason is to subvert the old male-popular figure (like you can see with the Marlboro's cowboy or business executives in Mad Men series)
