“Some things are in our control and others not.

...Work, therefore to be able to say to every harsh appearance, ‘You are but an appearance, and not absolutely the thing you appear to be.’ And then examine it by those rules which you have, and first, and chiefly, by this: whether it concerns the things which are in our own control, or those which are not; and, if it concerns anything not in our control, be prepared to say that it is nothing to you.

    Epictetus, The Handbook, 1

You have control over “opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions.” If you concern yourself with things outside your control, you will be miserable.

My friend, there are two patterns set up in reality. One is divine and supremely happy; the other has nothing of God in it, and is the pattern of the deepest unhappiness. This truth the evildoer does not see; blinded by folly and utter lack of understanding, he fails to perceive that the effect of his unjust practices is to make him grow more and more like the one, and less and less like the other. For this he pays the penalty of living the life that corresponds to the pattern he is coming to resemble. And if we tell him that unless he is delivered from this ‘ability’ of his, when he dies the place that is pure of all evil will not receive him; that he will forever go on living in this world a life after his own likeness - a bad man tied to bad company; he will but think, ‘This is the way fools talk to a clever rascal like me.’

“No evil can happen to a good man, either in life or after death.”--Plato

My interpretation, believing in a god that is absolutely good, then by the law of Democritus`s mutual influence of the same essences, he will be saved from the mutual evils of evil things. I do remember there is a an ancient saying in buddhist teachings that doing evils things unto one another is exactly the same ego of evil at work, like ones own alter-ego. But a chinese proverb says: 恶人自有恶人磨/Evil people suffer evil from their own kinds.

By saying this, being born into this world does sound like a karma, although nobody remembers assenting to it and it is still a long way to be able to accept it at its worst for most people. "Beyond control" from Epictetus is not verbially expressive in the terms of the current discussion, because people have already controlled many things that they should not, the problem is not being able or not, but should or should not. The practicability of wisdom is also my primary concern: I believe in practice people tend to creat a world that is almost contradictory to what they think, teach and believe. The question is, is changing the reality really a thing should a wise man concern himself about? my own answer is Not, but to work toward a direction of changing in a way that is in accordance to ones own believes and principle matters the most, it is almost unnecessarry to set a mandatory image of the goal, rather it is important to discipline ones own actions in practice and struggle. This is what matters the most to each person, the process of justice not the definite result in reality of justice.

    Vindication of hypocrisy:

In practice, creating a reality that is contradictory to the ideological believes is not a hypocrisy, but an inevitable destiny of human nature and weaknesses. This is to be called human weaknesses not hypocrisy. True hypocrisy is intentional deception in the process and the false paint at the end. However the result might be beautiful and attractive, the process of evil should not be ignored. That is to say, a superfacial image of ideological victory is where people should be the most concerned about hypocrisy and evils.

He who fails to obtain the object of his desire is disappointed, and he who incurs the object of his aversion wretched. If, then, you confine your aversion to those objects only which are contrary to the natural use of your faculties, which you have in your own control, you will never incur anything to which you are averse. But if you are averse to sickness, or death, or poverty, you will be wretched. ... If you desire any of the things which are not in your own control, you must necessarily be disappointed; and of those which are, and which it would be laudable to desire, nothing is yet in your possession. Use only the appropriate actions of pursuit and avoidance; and even these lightly, and with gentleness and reservation.
