To the 1200s it was still Saami region. Around 1300 south Finns populated the coast line, inland was Saami area to the 1600s, mostly uninhabited. The king's driving idea was to populate all coastal areas to secure it from Russians and it succeeed. Colonists got extra privileges to rule and tax Saamis as a compensation for defending area against Russians. This led to wars lasting 300 years. Still in the Great Northern War the Czar remembered it because he gave on order to kill civilians (30% killed) and burn the whole area to black soil. Still Stalin tried to occupy it in the Winter War, yet didn't succeed. So Sweden wanted to control the coast line from the middle on the 14 century by south Finnish colonists. It was like the Central USA in the 1700s. Only laws were sword and rifle. After the king Gustav Vasa's order in the middle of the 16th century East Finns, still with Karelian orgin, started an expansion to the Oulu direction, now the Oulu area is "multicultural" including also recent immigrants from Iraq etc. In the economic view in the coastal area seafaring has been important and the peak point was during the Russian era when Finland had one of the the biggest commercial navies in Europe. The livelihood in inlands is husbandry. Oulu is today known of its hitec companies and university.

There are Finland's best beaches, because low shores keep the ground clean. In the South Finland river mud stays on shores. There are also biggest rivers.

OP obviously asks, but has not strenght to reveal his reasons. Alright, obviously it is so and no problem.

But I put the end statement mildly to expain why I am interested in this question and why I have studied history. It is so that without my ancestors quests today would hear there only Russian and instead of Oulun Kärpät there would be a Russian KHL team to cheer.

ha ha very funny. Best beaches sure if you want to walk in sand like Bedouins in Sahara. Good luck going to swim in that radioactive toxic pond they call Baltic Sea. Only if you want to grow yourself a tail right.

Everybody knows best beaches are in Savonia and Karelia where lakes are more than you can count, and waters are clean and zero mud anywhere. Now go cry tears of fail and don't argue against facts.

Estonia was caught, so it is easier to remember. Actually those destroyed Bothnian areas were never occupied by Russia and destroying it was a short revenge episode. Novgorod and Moscow tried 300 years to get it, but of course main forces were in southern areas, but at the same time the Bothnian Bay was an alternative sea route and the coast line would have served good places of stronholds and land connection against Sweden.

Ostrobotnians were dominated by Karelian pirates camping at Oulujärvi. Fex. Kiveksen rosvot. Talas-Eera, my relative, made Ostrobotnian men and women wet their pants - for different reasons
