Well ancient Macedonians were considered by Hellenes as pseudo Greek / pesudo Barbarians. That's how Aristotle was perceived in Athens.

Could be, most of those from this region were paleo-balkan mutts, but I heard his father actually thought alot against Illyrians. But could be that he had distantly Illyrian blood. Alexander himself was a preacher of muttism, he wanted cross races more than anyone.

Question "please provide credible evidence." — is their self-image sufficiently detailed?

Wikipedia In the 4th century BC,
the Illyrian king Bardylis united several Illyrian tribes and engaged in conflicts with Macedon
to the south-east, but was defeated.

Bardyllis was succeeded by Grabos II, then by Bardylis II, and then by Cleitus the Illyrian,
who was defeated by Alexander the Great.

Philip II of Macedon was the king of the kingdom of Macedon
from 359 BC until his assassination in 336 BC.
He was a member of the Argead dynasty of Macedonian kings,
the third son of King Amyntas III of Macedon,
and father of Alexander the Great
    and Philip III.
