    This is mine!

Inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the various archaeological finds, including the Megalithic Nucleus of Mezio, the village located in a valley crossed by the River Vez retains all the charm that characterizes the Alto Minho - verdant landscapes and traditional architecture in that stand out the Manor houses.

Part of the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez is part of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, where nature retains all its original charm and hides community villages such as Soajo, where the populations maintain their ancestral uses and customs.

Arcos de Valdevez is one of the four municipalities that make up the Lima Valley. In this region, touring the Giants Route is a way of getting to know the places where four great historical figures were born who took Portugal to the four corners of the world.

Fernão de Magalhães (*Ferdinand Magellan), the Navigator, from Ponte da Barca, commanded the first circumnavigation voyage proving that the Earth is round. In Ponte de Lima Blessed Francisco Pacheco (The Saint) was born, Messenger of the Society of Jesus and one of the first Jesuit missionaries in Japan. João Alvares Fagundes (the Discoverer), from Viana do Castelo, explored and discovered Newfoundland in the North Atlantic, important cod fishing area. Originally from Arcos de Valdevez was Father Himalaya, the inventor, scientific scholar of renewable energies who represented Portugal at the Universal Exposition in St. Louis, in the United States.

bump. I understand if you feel exposed but you can share a larger area like a region instead.
And give the reasons why with historical information or historical figures.

Sertã's bridge, dated from the XVII century.

Sertã is a Portuguese village in the district of Castelo Branco, central region of Portugal, Pinhal Interior Sul.

The town has about 5 500 inhabitants, being the main town of the Pinhal Interior Sul. Altogether, the municipality has an area of 453.13 km² and 16,720 inhabitants.

Sertã is located in a schistose valley, in a forested area with predominance of maritime pine, eucalyptus and olive trees. It is bathed by two streams, Ribeira da Sertã (Ribeira Grande) and Ribeira do Amioso (Ribeira Pequena). The entire west of the county is bounded by the Zêzere River.

During several centuries, Sertã witnessed the passage of historical tribes and civilizations, namely the Lusitanians (small archaeological fortified hillforts existing in the county), Roman (several archaeological remains in the county), Arabs, among others.

    Sertã's Castle

According to legend, Sertã castle was built in 74 BC by Quinto Sertório, a Roman general who was exiled for political reasons. He came to the Iberian Peninsula around 80 BC and allied himself with the Lusitanians after they promised him their support and invited him to be their leader.

In the battles that took place during the conquest of Lusitania, there was a Roman attack on the castle, during which the head of the castle died, giving rise to a legend linked to the origin of the name of this town.

It tells us of the bravery of Celinda, wife of the castle's chief, in the face of one of the Roman attacks. Knowing the inauspicious news of her husband's death, while inside the castle she was frying eggs in a Sertã [square frying pan], and knowing of the approach of the enemies to the walls, she climbed the battlements and with this utensil full of boiling oil she poured it over the attackers to defend the castle and avenge her husband's death.

Acting in this way, she forced them to retreat, preventing them from entering until the reinforcement from neighboring places arrived. The town, which until then had an unknown name, was named after such an unheard-of feat.

Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, Prior of the Order of the Hospital, chose Cernache do Bonjardim (parish in the municipality of Sertã) to build his Paços, this being the place where, in 1360, his son Nuno Álvares Pereira was born, known for his exploits in the battle of Aljubarrota and canonized as Saint Nuno of Santa Maria in April 2009.

The Battle of Aljubarrota, fought between the Kingdom of Portugal and the Crown of Castile on 14 August 1385

His particular flag was white, rectangular, divided in the center into four fields by a red cross; the cross of the shield of Galaad, painted in the blood of the redeemer; in each quarter it had a pious image and in the four corners as many shields of his lineage, which was that of the Alvares Pereira.

The village of Sistelo, Arcos de Valdevez is one of the most beautiful in Portugal and is known as "Portuguese Tibet".

It was the national winner of the “7 Wonders of Portugal” in the Rural Village category in 2017, being known for Portuguese Tibet. It is located at the gates of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, next to the source of the river Vez, and has as a mark of its identity the incredible terraces, unique in our country, shaped by human hands over hundreds of years, and which today dazzle who visit this place.

The municipality of Arcos de Valdevez is part of the World Biosphere Reserve, places defined by UNESCO as living laboratories for the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems and species, where research, and monitoring platforms are integrated , education and public awareness. In addition, the Vez and Lima rivers are part of the Natura 2000 Network's list of Sites of Community Importance, due to the importance and rarity of the flora and fauna found here.
