How strange. All Ukraine/Zelensky had to do was let Crimea and the Donbass go: Several problems solved, and the could then move closer to EU, maybe even NATO.

Ukraine has inherited from the Soviet Union lots of mobile anti-aircraft missile launchers (several hundreds). They are 30 yo but still can easily bring down planes that fly high. Add to this thousands of MANPADS, Soviet and Western, that are deadly for low flying aircraft, particularly helicopters. Russia has already lost about a fourth of the fleet they allocated for this conflict.

To this add lack of coordination between airforce and land forces. They are simply afraid to bomb own troops during large scale operations. And it is caused by complete lack of modern encrypted communication in Russian invasion forces. They use Aliexpress walkie-talkie and mobile phones relying on Ukrainian telecoms... This is why they are massively eavesdropped by NATO and Ukrainian intel.

There is historical precedence that Russians have previously lied about the true extent and power of their nuke arsenal. There is also historical precedence that Pentagon has bought on on the Russian lies hook and sink, so even if Pentagon believes Russians, doesn't mean that Pentagon is right and I'm wrong. During early days of Cold War there was this happening: missile gap. Russians claimed they had several hundred nukes. It was later found out that they had about 12 or something.

Yet we're not in the early days of Cold War anymore - the situation is changed rather significantly. You can't just make nuclear weapons while nobody's noticing like before. The very number of nuclear weapons is in fact irrelevant, as both NATO and Russia would obliterate each other's military in a matter of hours, given that these things are ok to use, no matter which side is going to start that anyway. We'd have a mutually assured destruction ongoing, while either of the sides using but a tiny fraction of their true potential. That, and Russia has more tactical, small-scale nuclear missiles than the US.

I entertained this thought for a while. But with this full scale invasion it is obvious that Putin would have never stopped at Donbass. He wants the whole USSR back. He's completely mad.

If that were the case, if that was the scenario that played out, I would be against Russia/Putin on that. But it didn't. This is Zelensky's war and Ukraine deserves everything that he's tossing it into.
