Even Western media is beginning to acknowledge Ukranian death toll is huge. What does 'Soviet doctrine' matter? The fact is Russia has air support, and the Ukranians do not. No air support means you're fucked. It means tanks are sitting ducks.




There is no need to advance when Ukrainians come to you without air support.

Today air defence seems to be too effective for enemy's air force on both sides. Even hardest objects, like missiles can be destroyed. True about bombing, but Russia has a fleet of strategic bombers that, on paper, could have carpet bombed Kiev night after night, like the US in Baghdad, but haven't. Reason why they'd get shot down.

Tactical air power is of course, hugely effective when used right but a few incidents of helicopters being effective on a 600mile front, helicopters are extremely vulnerable in the modern day.
