Finally some kind of admission they've been pushed back/suffered a setback, even if as you say it wasn't in the area of primary focus.

If that was ever a "setback" then it was perhaps one of the most miniscule/ trivial setbacks in military history.

For the purpose of me making fun of you later, can I ask what you see as Russia's endgoal?

Only God, Putin and the top generals would know... But for what's clear is to take most if not all of southern/ south eastern Ukraine and take it to themselves/ annex it.

Maybe, either way I don't dismiss or disrespect their war effort, even though certain elements (Winter War, Katyn, Warsaw) were despicable moral failings.

You think I support things like Katyn? Not in the slightest. One reason I hate politics is that it can lead to ridiculous implicatons, like the ones presented. It's no secret that people of the same etnicity are theit own biggest enemies.

1. There was a civil war in the Donbass, ethnic Russians were being denied basic rights (like keep learning their language) and to vote for their independence away from the Kiev regime. Many crimes were committed against those populations by neo-nazis, a major offensive against the Donbass was about to start. The losses will be compensated by territorial, strategic and political gains.

2. Big fucking deal...they were already NATO proxies, far worse for Russia would be having Ukraine joining NATO and nuclear weapons at the Russian border which the USA was pushing (even Zelensky said that Ukraine should develop nuclear weapons), Sweden and Finland will not allow that on their territories.

3. Sanctions work both ways, the EU basically only produces consumer goods and services, for the first they need raw materials and affordable energy, without those the economy will be severely damaged and less competitive. Russia has a huge market to export, Asia, BRICS etc), in time we will see who will be more damaged by the sanctions.

4. A significant part of the Ukrainian population is sympathetic towards Russia and realistically Ukraine is a shithole uber corrupt country with 3 times less the PC GDP of Russia. That for the south and eastern Ukraine which are the richer regions and Russia has interest, the rest will be a rump state that will be neutralized and eventually absorbed into the EU at a great economic cost.

5. Most of the world 8 billion population doesn't see it that way, but we in the collective West (a bit more than 1 billion people) are so arrogant that we consider we are the entire world.

1) Not so much when it comes to geo-political strategy, protecting your sovereignty from NATO, and your Russian people in another land. So worth the sacrifice in the eyes of Russia.
2) They just want to be the new target for Russian nukes, , I wouldn't wanna live there .

4) Like Rex said, there will always be enough Ukrainians sympathetic to Russia. I'm sure after this shitshow, Ukrainians will understand that their useless corrupt government was using them. failed, and would most likely retaliate back at them.
5) Only 1/4 to 1/3 (at most) of the planet is against Russia, the rest are normal human beings with a fucking brain, and whom are either neutral or understand why Russia lunched its operation.
