Russians are literally descendants of Kievan Rus people (+ maybe some non-slavic natives that they assimilated as Russia expanded).. At the time East Slavic speakers hadn't yet expanded that much towards Asia & ancestors of Russians lived in Kievan Rus territories.
Belarus, Ukraine, Russia = all offshoots of Kievan Rus.

If they descend from same people, how and when did the language start to differentiate.
Ive read that Russian and Ukrainian are quite different to each other.

At the end of the day it depends if one believes Russia has the right to its own National Security against NATO and whether NATO expansion surrounding Russia is justified.

Russia is merely protecting itself thats why they spanked Georgia and Ukraine and anyone else that threatens their national security.

Turkey could only have internal issues with rapidly growing Kurdish ethnic community that seeks independence, than to invade Balkan countries.

Turkey does not recognize Kurds as separate ethnicity. Official Turkish politics is that Kurds are "mountain Turks." But Kurds don't want to be Turks, and in the future they will took large part of Turkey and establish own independent state i am pretty sure.
