Ukraine is in terrible economic situation because of breakdown after USSR collapse, inability to transit into market economy, rampant corruption and crime.

Russia waged a very clean and successful military campaign in Syria, and saved thousands of innocent Syrian civilians from the hands of Islamic terrorists -- especially in liberating Aleppo. That is in contrast of American campaigns in the Middle East, which were far more messy.

I would assume that with 40 million people Ukraine might be able to put up some competent defense, but the fact that they've already lost an airport outside their capital on the first day is a really bad sign.
