Economically and possibly militarily, Russia and NATO would be screwed, the US may not suffer as much, but the countries of Europe can. China would benefit greatly, of course, as long as there is no nuclear war.

Obviously without counting nuclear weapons. Putin should know that if he launches nuclear bombs it will be the end of Russia.

Surely Russia would be obliterated by NATO.

The USSR actually had a plan to invade and occupy Turkey during the Cold War. They also planned to annex some eastern regions. But they gave up because they knew they would lose it.

The nukes Americans used on Japan were nothing compared to the alleged nuclear arsenal both sides possessed at the height of the Cold War. Soviets in the Cold War viewed any advancement of military or nuclear deployment capabilities as aggression and this was a legitimate strategy because the Soviets languished behind NATO in terms of nuclear technology and delivery systems. The USSR invested heavily in "dead man's hand" mechanisms because they couldn't defeat a first-strike and instead had to rely on autonomous retaliation.

Even now when they installed an ICBM defence system in Romania it pissed off Russia. It robs them of their deterrent strategy against the entirety of the West.
